Proprioception is ... according to the Cleveland Clinic where I was born, so the definition has to be good:}
Proprioception is one of our senses. It is your body's ability to sense it's own position and movement in space. AND, when we are skating, where we are placed over the blade, WOW! Just by practicing our sport we are using and improving proprioception every session, DOUBLE WOW!
I guess we take our senses for granted, except we have "equipment", in the rink to remind us how we are moving on the ice and over the blade. For instance ... seeing our reflexion in the plexiglass or a mirror is a useful piece of equipment, as well as video and feed back from friends and coaches. Another piece of equipment is fashion, yes, FASHION! I have been thinking about the use of stripes and lines in the designs for athletic wear, Adidas is just one example, TRIPLE WOW! The stripes on an Adidas jacket show where the athlete is positioned, TA DA, PROPRIOCEPTION:}
Take a look at the images I have included in this rant:} The models look so fashionable and also well defined in space, think of how their clothing emphasizes how well they are moving and performing.
ALL this has been leading me to experiment with Visualization Wear for figure skaters ... stay tuned for VISUALIZATION VESTS by AIO. Custom made, functional and fashionable vests to help skaters and their coaches with proprioception.
